Va. sees increase in COVID-19 cases for third week in a row

Deaths also up from last week, as Northam urges caution in Hampton Roads

Published July 13, 2020 by Kate Andrews

Virginia saw an increase in COVID-19 cases for the third week in a row, with 5,540 more cases reported between July 6 and July 13, compared with 3,920 cases the previous week and 3,724 the last week of June.

Virginia’s total confirmed and probable cases is 71,642 since tracking began in February.

The seven-day positivity rate reported Monday is 6.8%, up from 6.1% July 6.

The state also reported 115 new deaths related to the coronavirus last week, up two from the previous week, bringing the total to 1,968. Compared to other states — including Florida, Arizona and Texas, which have seen dramatic increases in the number of cases and deaths in recent weeks — Virginia is still in relatively good shape regarding the pandemic. According to the Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Association’s COVID-19 dashboard, 1,129 people are currently hospitalized across the state with confirmed and pending test results, and the state’s hospitals still have enough beds and ventilators available if the number increases.

However, Gov. Ralph Northam has expressed concern about numbers increasing in Hampton Roads, which has seen its average of new daily cases more than triple over the past two weeks, and he said the state’s schools will not reopen for in-person classes this fall if Virginia is not able to stay in Phase Three of his reopening plan.

These are the Virginia localities that have seen 400 or more total cases, as of July 13:

  • Fairfax County: 14,556
  • Prince William County: 7,847
  • Loudoun County: 4,431
  • Chesterfield County: 3,216
  • Henrico County: 2,891
  • Arlington County: 2,626
  • Alexandria: 2,456
  • Richmond: 2,432
  • Virginia Beach: 1,978
  • Norfolk: 1,588
  • Manassas: 1,493
  • Chesapeake: 1,326
  • Spotsylvania County: 1,083
  • Stafford County: 1,065
  • Accomack County: 1,041
  • Harrisonburg: 988
  • Culpeper County: 857
  • Newport News: 815
  • Rockingham County: 795
  • Portsmouth: 714
  • Shenandoah County: 615
  • Roanoke: 588
  • Buckingham County: 577
  • Suffolk: 573
  • Albemarle County: 563
  • Frederick County: 553
  • Hampton: 544
  • Fauquier County: 497
  • Hanover County: 483
  • Manassas Park: 462

Globally, there are 12.97 million reported COVID-19 cases and 570,220 confirmed deaths as of July 13. The United States, which has the most confirmed cases and deaths worldwide, has seen 3.32 million confirmed cases so far, with 135,272 deaths nationwide attributed to the coronavirus since February.
