Va. COVID-19 cases exceed 40,000

One-fourth of state's cases reported in Fairfax County

The Virginia Department of Health reported 40,249 confirmed and probable cases of COVID-19 in the state Wednesday, up 907 from Tuesday. Also, Fairfax County exceeded 10,000 cases Wednesday.

The total number of deaths is 1,281, up 45 over the past 24 hours, and the number of confirmed positive patients in hospitals, along with those whose test results are pending, is 1,459, according to the Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Association.

VDH reports that more than 275,000 PCR tests have been given statewide, and the percentage of positive cases continues to decline. The most recent date, May 23, saw a 13.9% positivity rate.

These are the Virginia localities that have reported 400 or more cases, as of May 27:

  • Fairfax County: 10,069
  • Prince William County: 5,074
  • Loudoun County: 2,274
  • Arlington County: 1,988
  • Alexandria: 1,824
  • Henrico County: 1,546
  • Chesterfield County: 1,263
  • Richmond: 1,112
  • Manassas: 966
  • Accomack County: 780
  • Harrisonburg: 746
  • Virginia Beach: 646
  • Culpeper County: 645
  • Stafford County: 657
  • Rockingham County: 483
  • Spotsylvania County: 474
  • Chesapeake: 472
  • Norfolk: 451
  • Buckingham County: 445

Globally, there are 5.61 million reported COVID-19 cases and 351,146 confirmed deaths as of May 27. In the United States, which has the most confirmed cases and deaths worldwide, there are 1.68 million confirmed cases and 98,933 deaths attributed to the coronavirus.
