Van Metre has been involved in the operations of his family real estate company since 1963, when he first joined the company founded by his father eight years earlier. In 2002, he was appointed vice chairman, and in 2008, he was promoted to chairman. He also serves as a trustee for the Van Metre Family Trusts.
Today, the company, which started out building single-family homes, has numerous subsidiaries. The companies’ business includes constructing single-family homes and building and managing commercial and multifamily properties.
In June, Van Metre won the New York Yacht Club Regatta and competed in the Newport Bermuda Race, sailing the Running Tide, the 60-foot yacht that he and his father sailed to win the Bermuda race in 1976. Van Metre reacquired the vessel in 2018, meticulously restoring it.
Van Metre and his sister, Alison Van Metre Paley, established the Van Metre Family Foundation, which benefits education, the arts, veterans, people living in poverty and animal welfare. The foundation has donated more than $4.4 million to charities since 2002. The real estate company also donated $20 million worth of land in Ashburn to George Mason University, which changed the name of its Founders Hall to Van Metre Hall in 2019.
