OrthoVirginia and Bon Secours to build $20 million medical office facility in Hanover County

Published January 16, 2014 by Paula C. Squires

OrthoVirginia and Bon Secours Richmond Health System said Thursday that they would break ground soon on a $20 million, 63,490-square-foot medical facility specializing in orthopedics and sports-medicine treatment and rehabilitation. The building, adjacent to Bon Secours’ Memorial Regional Medical Center Campus in Hanover County, is expected to provide 150 construction jobs.

Organizers said the initiative would bring together the talents of orthopedic specialists in sports, hand, knee and hip, spine, pediatrics and sports medicine in one building.

OrthoVirginia built a similar project – a $25 million, 70,000-square-foot medical building — at the Boulder’s Office Park in Chesterfield County, which opened in December 2011. Its partner in that project was HCA Virginia, with HCA’s Chippenham Hospital located nearby.

The Lingerfelt Cos. in Henrico County, the same company that developed the Chesterfield facility, will develop the Hanover orthopedic/sports medicine project. The company plans to seek LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification for the building’s green building design and operation. Completion is scheduled for December 2014.

“We’re very excited about this new state-of-the-art facility that offers the community and the region an extraordinary resource for orthopedic specialties and rehabilitation services, allowing patients to be conveniently treated in one location,” OrthoVirginia Administrator James Perkins, said in a statement.  “… This comprehensive, fully digital facility will offer electronic patient files, physician records, and X-rays.”

Perkins said in an interview with Virginia Business that his firm will lease 25,000 square feet of the new space. Success with the building in Chesterfield encouraged it to move forward on a second venture, he added. “The first building has been successful and efficient. It costs us less than leasing.”

The new three-story building adds space to OrthoVirginia’s network of orthopedic specialists who occupy a smaller space in Hanover, off the front lobby at St. Francis Hospital and at several other locations in the Richmond area: the Boulders Office Park, Parham/Henrico Doctor’s Hospital, and stand-alone medical buildings at Johnston-Willis Hospital and St. Mary’s Hospital. Satellite offices also are located in Prince George County, Kilmarnock and Farmville.

Lingerfelt has selected architectural firm Price Studios, construction firm DPR Construction and engineering firm Rummel, Klepper  & Kahl as part of the team to work on the project.
