Old Point National Bank will celebrate grand opening of new corporate headquarters

Published May 7, 2014 by Paula C. Squires

Old Point National Bank will celebrate the grand opening of its new corporate headquarters in downtown Hampton on May 8 at 8:30 am.

Located at 101 E. Queen St., Old Point’s six-story, 54,000-square-foot headquarters was designed in a style evocative of early 20th century architecture.  It represents an expansion for the company, bringing a full-service branch as well as the regional headquarters, and more than 60 corporate employees to downtown Hampton.

Old Point will convert its former headquarters, which includes five buildings in Phoebus, into the Old Point Operations Center.

Norfolk-based Lyall Design served as the project’s architect and Henderson Inc., based in Williamsburg, served as the general contractor.

“Old Point opened for business at a counter inside Cooper’s confectionery store in Phoebus in1923,  and we have grown substantially since then,” Robert F. Shuford, chairman and president of Old Point Financial Corp., said in a statement. “Extending our corporate presence to downtown Hampton as well as in Phoebus is part of the bank’s ongoing expansion strategy.”

In February, Old Point  opened the downtown Hampton branch on the first floor of its new headquarters.  It incorporated a piece of the company’s history by installing the 12-ton polished steel vault door that served at the bank’s first location.

The first floor also houses an exhibit of some of the artifacts unearthed during an archeological dig of the site. The pieces are on display, accompanied by pictures and narratives illustrating the dig, the finds and the history behind the efforts.

Over the last two months, the second and third floors have filled with employees from the bank’s other departments, including commercial lending, private finance, and marketing.

The fifth floor serves as the executive’s suite, with a boardroom andcasual meeting area.  The sixth floor, the Roof Top Garden facility, is an indoor/outdoor meeting space with views of downtown Hampton.

Today's opening, with  breakfast and tours, celebrates the completion of the building as Old Point begins to refocus expansion efforts into its Phoebus campus’ Operational Center.
