Number of COVID-19 cases now above 2,800 in Monday update

54 people in Virginia have died from causes related to virus, VDH says

Published April 6, 2020 by Kate Andrews

In Monday’s update, 2,878 people in Virginia have tested positive for COVID-19, the Virginia Department of Health reports, up 233 cases from Sunday. There are also 54 deaths related to the virus, up from 51 Sunday, and 497 people hospitalized and 24,521 tested.

The Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Association has published a new dashboard of statewide COVID-19 statistics that will be updated at 9 a.m. daily, including a count of people currently hospitalized who have tested positive and those whose test results are pending, and how many ventilators are in use or available at hospitals in Virginia.

On Monday’s VHHA update, 1,194 people were currently hospitalized — including 538 who are confirmed positive and 656 whose COVID-19 tests are pending. Of the total, 387 are in ICU beds and 285 patients are on ventilators.

The number of hospitalized people who have confirmed positive tests is higher on the VHHA dashboard Monday than on VDH’s Monday update — a difference based on different sources of information, VHHA spokesperson Julian Walker explained.

“VDH’s data captures Virginia residents with COVID-19 who were hospitalized at the time of public health investigation and therefore may underrepresent the total number because it does not capture patients hospitalized at some later point during their illness,” he said. “VHHA’s data is based on figures supplied by hospitals and health systems across the commonwealth and does not filter out non-Virginia residents or include confirmed cases in other care settings.”

VHHA also reported that there are 666 ventilators in use, out of 2,566 on hand, and there are 5,519 beds available as of Monday. VHHA also reports that 11 hospitals are experiencing difficulty in obtaining or replenishing personal protective equipment (PPE) within the next 72 hours, and one reports trouble obtaining other medical equipment in the next three days.

VHHA’s information — covering 115 facilities statewide — comes from the Virginia Healthcare Alerting Status System COVID-19 Status Board, with data reported by 110 member hospitals and 27 health systems.

VHHA partnered with the the Virginia Department of Health in 2002 to establish the Virginia Healthcare Emergency Management Program to address public health threats with health care facilities, emergency responders and other stakeholders.
