You are co-chair of the Virginia Bar Association Pro Bono Council. What are some of its projects? The VBA Pro Bono Council seeks to promote greater participation by lawyers in pro bono work. Through its Firms in Service initiative, groups of law firms around the commonwealth seek to tackle specific needs in their communities, including coordination with legal aid providers to cover areas with a high volume of cases, such as uncontested divorce, developing programs for areas emerging concern, such as eviction, and exploring innovative approaches from nontraditional perspectives, such as medical legal partnerships.

What else needs to be done to provide more legal services to underserved groups? If every lawyer in Virginia met the aspirational goal in Rule 6.1 of devoting 2% of professional time to providing pro bono services, we could significantly narrow the justice gap.
