With more than a decade of experience in environmental and natural resources proceedings, Smith handles litigation, enforcement defense, project development and compliance counseling. Among his notable clients are Dominion Energy Inc., the Virginia Manufacturers Association and the Virginia Coal & Energy Alliance.
Besides managing more than 150 attorneys at the firm’s Richmond office, Smith also helps lead Troutman Pepper’s national Environmental and Natural Resources Practice Group.
Before joining Troutman Pepper in 2013, Smith was co-chair of the global environmental practice at Hunton & Williams (now Hunton Andrews Kurth). Smith serves as director of environmental affairs for the Metallurgical Coal Producers Association and is legal counsel for the EPRI Ohio River Basin Interstate Water Quality Trading Project, the Virginia Manufacturers Association and the Corporate Environmental Enforcement Council.
A graduate of the University of Richmond and Vermont Law and Graduate School, Smith has received numerous awards and accolades for his work. He was named one of the nation’s 50 Energy & Environmental Trailblazers by The National Law Journal, and a Leader in Law by Virginia Lawyers Weekly.
