PRESIDENT AND CEO, MARY WASHINGTON HEALTHCARE, FREDERICKSBURG
Since 2015, McDermott has led the not-for-profit hospital system that includes two hospitals in Fredericksburg and Stafford County, three emergency departments and about 50 clinics and other outpatient facilities. It employs about 5,000 people, including 600 doctors.
Generating $925 million in revenue in fiscal year 2022, Mary Washington began its new Graduate Medical Education program this year, offering new medical school graduates residencies at Mary Washington Hospital and the system’s outpatient facilities. In February, the health system reached a new multiyear contract agreement with Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield following a dispute over reimbursement rates.
A radiologist, McDermott previously practiced with Radiologic Associates of Fredericksburg and is a graduate of Villanova University, receiving his medical degree from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine and an MBA from the University of Virginia’s Darden School of Business.
McDermott is a past chair of the Virginia Hospital and Healthcare Association, which advocates on behalf of hospitals and health care systems, and he continues to serve on its board. In 2020, he received The Healthcare Council’s Matthew F. McNulty Award, which recognizes health care leaders who have made significant contributions to the industry.
