Richmond-basedBaskervillandBurt Pinnock, founding principal ofBAM Architects, have joined forces. Pinnock will transition into a role as principal at Baskervill. The merger creates a 100-person design firm of architects, engineers, interior designers, urban planners and support personnel.(VirginiaBusiness.com)

C&F Bankin West Point plans to buyCentral Virginia Bankin Powhatan. C&F will pay $855,000 in cash or 32 cents per share to acquire CVB and its holding company, Central Virginia Bankshares. C&F said it will also pay $3.35 million to redeem the preferred stock and common stock warrants CVB had yet to buy back from the U.S. Treasury as part of the TARP Capital Purchase Program. The deal would bring C&F’s total assets to $1.35 billion.(RichmondBizSense.com)

Richmond-basedHealth Diagnostic Laboratory Inc.is forming a joint venture with a Canadian company to bring to market a blood test for assessing colon cancer risk. HDL is partnering with Toronto-based GeneNews Ltd. to establish an accredited clinical laboratory in Henrico County to be named Innovative Diagnostic Laboratory LLP.(Richmond Times-Dispatch)

Online programs have boostedLiberty University’s enrollment to more than 100,000 students. Liberty says in a news release that 90,000 students were enrolled in Liberty University Online this year. Eighty percent of the school’s more than 15,000 graduates were online students. The university says Liberty Online’s enrollment increased 23 percent, compared with a year ago. (Richmond Times-Dispatch)

Rural Goochland Countyis about to get its first apartment community, The Retreat at West Creek — a 254-unit upscale complex in the West Creek office park. The first apartments will open this fall. The community will have one- and two-bedroom units ranging from 700 square feet to about 1,300 square feet.(Richmond Times-Dispatch)

TheUniversity of Virginiahas declared its first round of worldwide online classes a success, promising more offerings on the Coursera network in the coming year. The five free courses this year reached more than 150,000 people across the globe. At least nine classes have been firmed up for the next year.(The Virginian-Pilot)

TheVirginia Commonwealth University Health Systemplans to build a free-standing children’s hospital. While many details of the plan are still in flux, the children’s hospital would have an open medical staff, its own management structure and its own governing board with community representation. The hospital would be part of the VCU Medical Center, and any financial surplus from the hospital would be reinvested in children’s services.  (VirginiaBusiness.com)

Virginia State University(VSU) in Petersburg has selected Fairfax-based MBP to provide construction project management for a $60 million multipurpose center. MBP will provide project management, design review and quality assurance inspections, among other services. The project is scheduled to begin this August, with completion scheduled for May 2015.(VirginiaBusiness.com)
