Dr. John A. Jane Jr. will be the first chair of Carilion Clinic’s newly formed neurosurgery department beginning June 19, the Roanoke-based health system announced Tuesday.

“Dr. Jane will join a strong neurosurgical team at Carilion,” Dr. Daniel Harrington, Carilion’s interim chief medical officer, said in a statement. “We’re excited to continue expanding our program with such a capable leader.”

Jane comes from UVA Health and specializes in the treatment of pituitary tumors and techniques that are minimally invasive to the brain. He has written about pituitary surgery treatment and outcomes, has served on the editorial board of the Journal of Neurosurgery and is a past president of The Neurosurgical Society of the Virginias.

At UVA Health, he has held various positions, including director of pediatric neurosurgery, director of pituitary surgery, outpatient medical director of neurosurgery and residency program director.

Jane is also a professor of neurosurgery and pediatrics at the University of Virginia School of Medicine. Once the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine’s academic department of neurosurgery is approved and established, he will serve as its chair.

Jane holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Chicago, and his medical degree is from U.Va. He completed his general surgery internship at UVA Health and began his neurosurgical residency there before spending a year as a neurosurgery fellow at Auckland City Hospital in Auckland, New Zealand. Jane returned to UVA Health to complete his neurosurgical residency. He then completed a one-year fellowship, acting as the chief fellow of pediatric neurosurgery, in Toronto at The Hospital for Sick Children.

Jane then returned to UVA Health, and in 2004, he became director of the division of pediatric neurosurgery.

Carilion also named a vice president for its department of neurosurgery. Mark Miller, Carilion’s vice president of orthopaedic surgery, will be the new vice president of the department in addition to his current role.

Miller received a bachelor’s degree in policy analysis and management from Cornell University and a master’s degree in health services administration from the University of Michigan, as well as a master’s degree in finance from the University of Colorado.

Carilion started its neurosurgery program in 2003. The team of surgeons, residents and advanced clinical care practitioners is based in Carilion’s Institute for Orthopaedics and Neurosciences in Roanoke. The health system expects its new department, formed because of increased demand for neurosurgical services, to provide opportunities for new clinical trials, according to a news release.
