Darden case-study method goes on the road

In mid-May, 18 students graduated from a 10-course Certificate in Entrepreneurship program held in Danville. Sponsored by the Danville Regional Foundation, the project was created by the University of Virginia School of Continuing Education and the Tayloe Murphy Center at the Darden School of Business.

The Danville area has rivers and lakes to paddle and fish; hiking and biking trials; an outdoor performance venue; science, art and history museums; and a minor-league baseball team. You can find many of those diversions in other places, but a motorsports resort that offers skeet shooting is a little out of the ordinary.

A cupcake of a deal

Small businesses offer goods and services at massive discounts (at least half off) through Groupon and LivingSocial, which take a cut of the sales in exchange for promoting the deals to their massive localized databases of subscribers. (Groupon’s regular merchant price is a 50 percent split plus 2.5 percent charge on customers’ credit card purchases. News reports say LivingSocial charges 40 percent and does not charge credit card transaction fees. Both sites, however, may vary merchant fees depending on the type of deals offered.)
