Urology of Virginia to expand in Virginia Beach
- December 17, 2013
Urology of Virginia plans to expand into a new 42,585-square-foot building adjacent to its current location at 225 Clearfield Ave. in Virginia Beach.
The facility will house a cancer center on the first floor, an ambulatory surgery center on the second floor and physician offices and a conference room on the third floor. Construction should begin in March 2014, and the company expects to move in between March and June of 2015.
Urology of Virginia said Tuesday that it plans to invest $17.8 million in capital improvements and business property. The expansion is expected to create 66 full-time jobs, including eight physicians and 58 staff with combined average salaries of $72,811.
Based on these plans, the Virginia Beach Development Authority has awarded Urology of Virginia a $150,000 grant to assist with the expansion.
It aligns with the city’s economic development industry plan to attract, retain and assist with the expansion of biotech, research and health care companies.
“We also know that having practices like Urology of Virginia in Virginia Beach attracts even more businesses within this industry sector,” Warren D. Harris, director of Virginia Beach Economic Development, said in a statement. “We anticipate a return on this investment of $118 to every $1 invested within a year.”
Currently, Urology of Virginia employs 157 people including 24 physicians. In addition to urology medical services, the practice includes the Schellhammer Urological Research Foundation, a non-profit organization that supports education of residents and fellows; the Paul F. Schellhammer Cancer Center; and the Devine‐Jordan Center for Reconstructive Surgery and Pelvic Health.
The practice formed in 1997 with the merger of nine urology practices. One of them was Dr. Charles Devine Sr.’s practice, whose program has been associated with the beginning of Eastern Virginia Medical School and the department of urology for EVMS, particularly in training the urologists for the future.
The practice focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of all urological conditions in five Hampton Roads locations.
