Wayside Inn sells for $1 million
- May 1, 2009
A Northern Virginia couple has purchased the Wayside Inn in Middletown, according to The Winchester Star.
Lois and Jacob Charon bought the property Thursday for $1 million and will become the official owners May 28. The couple told the Star they previously have operated a hotel in Richmond.
The Wayside Inn, which opened in 1797, is known as the longest-operating inn in America.
Because of the recession, the business had decided only to open on weekends. Heirs of the late owner, Leo Bernstein, decided to sell it to the Bernstein Family Foundation. Bernstein had bought the property in 1960. The foundation plans to donate the proceeds to charity.
The inn includes 22 rooms, a conference center and a restaurant.
