Virginia’s unemployment rate steadies
- April 30, 2009
Virginia’s unemployment rate remained steady from February to March at 7 percent.
Many metropolitan areas saw slight drops in their unemployment rates, including Danville, Harrisonburg, Roanoke, Winchester and Virginia Beach. Jobless rates remained the same in Richmond (7.8 percent) and Northern Virginia (5.2 percent), which continued to report the lowest unemployment rate in the state.
The Danville region again reported the highest jobless rate at 12.2 percent.
Typically, March shows an increase in employment over February because of increased tourism and outdoor work. Slow construction work and a damp and wet March prevented an increase in outside work, according to the Virginia Employment Commission.
