Virginia’s unemployment rate falls to 6.4 percent

Virginia’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate fell 0.1 percentage point to 6.4 percent in October.
During October, the commonwealth’s labor force increased by 16,403, while the number of unemployed remained the same. October’s rate was 0.3 percentage point lower than Virginia’s unemployment rate in October 2010.
The national rate also fell 0.1 percentage point in October to 9 percent.
The commonwealth’s unadjusted rate in October decreased 0.4 percentage points from September to 6 percent, and 0.4 percentage point lower than the October 2010 rate. Unemployment typically dips in October because of employment at schools.
During October, the number of Virginians receiving unemployment benefits was 54,123, up from 52,137 in September but down from 64,541 in October 2010.
