Virginia’s restaurant smoking ban takes effect today
- December 1, 2009
Smokers took their last puff in many Virginia restaurants last night.
Starting today, all Virginia restaurants are required to go smoke free, unless they provided a walled off, separately ventilated area for smokers. Private clubs are exempt from the ban, and smoking is still allowed in restaurants’ outside eating areas.
Smokers and restaurant owners who violate the ban face a $25 fine.
Gov. Timothy M. Kaine is celebrating the start of the ban at Hamilton’s at First and Main in Charlottesville, Chadwicks in Alexandria and Home Team Grill in Richmond.
