About 28 percent of Virginians feel they are better off financially than they were a year ago, according to a poll conducted by The Roanoke College Institute for Policy and Opinion Research.

In addition, more than one-third of respondents believe they will be better off financially a year from now.

The Virginia Index of Current Conditions (VAICC) is based on household financial situations compared to the previous year and willingness to purchase durable goods such as refrigerators and furniture. The poll included surveys with 616 Virginians.

The VAICC was a score of 78 in February, up 22 percent from November.

Forty-three percent of Virginians surveyed said that now was a good time to purchase big-ticket items because of the deals available.
