Virginia offers tax relief for hurricane supplies
- May 17, 2010
Virginians will be able to buy supplies ahead of the hurricane and flood season next week without sales tax.
From May 25 until May 31, sales tax will not be charged on items such as batteries, flashlights, bottled water, cell phone batteries, duct tape, manual can openers and portable generators. A complete list of eligible items can be found at http://www.readyvirginia.gov.
Gov. Bob McDonnell is also recognizing next week as Hurricane and Flooding Preparedness Week. He is encouraging families to create an emergency kit that includes a three-day supply of bottled water and food.
“It is critical that every Virginian treat hurricane season seriously and understand how they could be affected by flooding, high winds and tornadoes during this time of year,” McDonnell said in a statement. “Those who live along coastal areas also need to learn if they are in a storm surge zone and determine where they would go if they have to evacuate. Everyone should take steps now to help keep their families safe.”
