Virginia has 18 firms on Fortune list

Eighteen Virginia firms have made the Fortune 500, a list of the country’s largest public companies based on revenue.

However, Virginia’s standing on the list is a little shaky. Richmond electronics retailer Circuit City went out of business. In addition, McLean-based Freddie Mac went into conservatorship. The list considered revenues for full years ending in February 2008.

Falls Church defense contractor General Dynamics was the highest-ranked Virginia firm on the list at spot No. 83. Dollar Tree Stores just made the list this year, coming in at No. 499.
