Virginia creates golf trail to promote tourism
- November 18, 2010
State officials hope a newly created Virginia Golf Trail will help boost tourism.
The trail website (http://www.VirginiaGolfTrail.com) will include 36 public and private golf courses throughout the state, divided into six zones. In addition to listing golf courses, each zone will recommend nearby hotels, restaurants, vineyards, historic sites and other attractions.
Criteria for selection of the golf courses include ratings by Golf Digest magazine, proximity to cultural and historic attractions and value-based pricing.
A study by Richmond-based Chmura Economics & Analytics predicts the golf trail could generate $66.6 million in economic activity annually and create 652 jobs when the program is fully developed.
The golf trail will be based at Cannon Ridge Golf Club in Stafford. Gary Schaal, the managing partner at Cannon Ridge, will be president of the golf trail. He is a former president of The PGA of America.
