Virginia could get between $700 million and $800 million under the federal government’s economic-stimulus package, according to the state transportation commissioner.

The money would likely go toward repairing bridges or highway maintenance rather than new projects, according to David S. Ekern.

The legislation is still being considered by the U.S. House of Representatives. The proposal includes a stipulation that 50 percent of the funding must be under contract within 120 days.

Ekern would not discuss which projects were being considered with a House Appropriations Committee. (Richmond Times-Dispatch)
