The Virginia Department of Transportation is increasing its snow removal budget 23 percent after last year’s harsh winter.
VDOT’s snow removal budget is now $115.1 million, $21.4 million above the agency’s snow budget last winter. VDOT spent $266.8 million last winter during record snowfall.
In preparation, VDOT has 48,000 tons of sand, 281,000 tons of salt and 138,000 gallons of liquid magnesium chloride.
The agency says its goal is to have all roads cleared 48 hours after the storm ends.
