VDOT commissioner to resign
- January 11, 2010
Virginia Department of Transportation Commissioner David S. Ekern will resign effective Jan. 15, according to the Richmond Times-Dispatch.
Ekern was appointed to his role in September 2006 by Gov. Timothy M .Kaine.
Gov.-elect Bob McDonnell, who will take office Saturday, has begun a nationwide search for a new VDOT commissioner.
VDOT is restructuring as it deals with a $4.6 billion six-year shortfall.
Last week, VDOT laid off 678 workers as in the final phase of its plan to reduce its work force to 7,500 by July 1.
The recent round of layoffs reduced many business support and administrative functions in the department.
