Two Virginia companies receiving federal grants to develop offshore wind farms

Two Richmond-area companies have received grants to help in developing offshore wind farms.
The U.S. Department of Energy has awarded a $4.1 million grant to Alstom Power Inc. in Midlothian to develop an advanced turbine control system and a $500,000 grant to Dominion Resources in Richmond to analyze a hypothetical 600-megawatt offshore wind project for performance and cost-of-energy estimates.
“These projects are part of our effort to partner with the private sector to add affordable, safe, clean wind energy to the portfolio of solutions to our growing energy needs,” Gov. Bob McDonnell said in a statement.
“While offshore wind energy will not solve our nation’s dependence on foreign sources of energy, it is a key element in our ‘all of the above’ approach to developing available domestic resources to meet our energy needs.”
In addition to the two Virginia projects, 41 others from 20 states also received federal funds.
