Transportation board to reopen rest areas
- January 20, 2010
The Commonwealth Transportation Board today voted to reopen 19 roadside rest areas in Virginia that had been closed because of budget problems. They are on Interstates 66, 81, 85 and 95.
The rest areas will reopen in three phases starting Feb. 17. All will be open by April 15.
The Virginia Department of Transportation closed the rest areas last year in the face of a $2.6 billion budget shortfall. Closing the facilities was expected to save $9 million.
Gov. Bob McDonnell had pledged to reopen the rest areas during his successful campaign last fall. The $3 million needed to reopen and operate the facilities will come from VDOT’s reserve funds.
