Tonya Mallory named Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year in Greater Washington
- July 3, 2012
Tonya Mallory, co-founder and CEO of Health Diagnostic Laboratory Inc. (HDL) in Richmond, has received the 2012 Ernst & Young Entrepreneur Of The Year award in Greater Washington. The award recognizes outstanding entrepreneurs who demonstrate excellence and extraordinary success in such areas as innovation, financial performance and personal commitment to their businesses and communities.
Mallory was selected from more than 80 nominations by a panel of independent judges. Awards were presented at a special gala at The Ritz-Carlton, Tysons Corner.
Mallory’s award comes during a period of rapid growth for the company. Opened in 2009, HDL provides testing for physicians and medical practices in about 45 states. “We offer a comprehensive panel of tests to help physicians personalize treatment based on more complete patient profiling. As a result of the evidence-based approach at Health Diagnostic Laboratory, the medical community now has the ability to earlier detect risk factors pre-disposing patients to disease and to provide more personalized, cost effective treatments,” Mallory said in a statement.
HDL employs more than 400 people, and is still adding jobs. The company also is in the midst of a $68.5 million, two-phase expansion that will demolish two buildings in the Virginia Biotechnology Research Park and replace them with two, six-story buildings. Those buildings will connect with HDL’s existing home in the park on North Fifth Street.
Regional Ernst & Young award winners are eligible for consideration for the Ernst & Young National Entrepreneur of the Year Program. Award winners in several national categories, as well as the Ernst & Young National Entrepreneur Of The Year Overall Award winner, will be announced at an annual gala in Palm Springs, Calif., on Nov. 7.
