Six Virginia companies make top 100 list for working moms
- September 22, 2009
Working Mother magazine today announced its annual list of 100 Best Companies for Working Mothers, and three health systems and three Virginia-based companies made the cut. They are: Bon Secours Richmond Health System; HCA Virginia Health System, Central Virginia Market; the Virginia Commonwealth University Health System, Capital One Financial Corp. , Booz Allen Hamilton and the Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corp. (Freddie Mac).
With men losing their jobs at a higher rate than women during the recession, the magazine says more working mothers are becoming their families’ primary breadwinner. It lauded the winning companies for continuing family-friendly programs and pioneering new ones.
Among the top 100 companies, all offer flextime, on-site lactation rooms and telecommuting. Ninety-nine percent offer health insurance to part-time workers. In addition, nearly all of them also provide job-sharing and wellness programs and financial support, including tuition reimbursement, retirement planning and pre-tax flexible spending accounts for child care.
The magazine’s recognition program is in its 24th year. Bon Secours has been named to the list consecutively since 1999, which earned it a spot among this year’s Top 10 winning companies. “Bon Secours is among an elite group of companies,” said Alisa Nadler, the Midwest/Southeast /Mid-Atlantic director of Working Mother Media, “… and should be proud of its hard work and efforts in creating innovative work-life programs.”
The not-for-profit Bon Secours Richmond Health System employs more than 7,000 people in four hospitals, and 85 percent of its workers are women.
