Summer hiring levels expected to be even this year

Teens may face less competition from older, experienced workers this summer when looking for a job, according to an annual survey commissioned by Snagajob.
The survey, commissioned for the fifth year in a row by the Richmond-based hourly job site, showed that 57 percent of hiring managers for seasonal help thought teens would face the toughest competition from their peers. During the past four years, hiring managers had said teenagers would face competition from older workers who were looking for summer work because of the bad economy.
The survey found that 29 percent of hiring managers thought it would be “easy” for teens to find a job this summer, up nine percentage points from last year.
Hiring levels are expected to be similar to last summer. Three in 10 hiring managers surveyed said they would hire the same number of employees as last summer. One in 10 said they were planning to hire more staff, while 16 percent said they would hire fewer.
The survey expected flat wages for seasonal workers, an average of $10.90 per hour.
But teens were advised to start looking for summer work early. For hiring managers planning to add summer staff, 13 percent had filled their positions in February, 11 percent planned to finish hiring in March and 23 percent will finish hiring in April. All together, the 79 percent planned to have hire summer help by the end of May.
The online survey was conducted by Ipsos Public Affairs for Snagajob. Respondents included 1,073 hiring managers. The margin of error is 2.99 percent.
