Smithfield subsidiary to close Iowa plant

John Morrell & Co. plans to close its hog processing and fresh meat fabrication plant in Sioux City, Iowa, in April.

The company, a subsidiary of Smithfield Foods, processes hogs and produces boneless pork loins at the Iowa plant.

John Morrell President Joseph B. Sebring said the plant, which was built in 1959, was one of the oldest and most outdated of Smithfield’s plants.

The closure will affect 1,450 employees.
