Smithfield Foods, in partnership with the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) union, is donating 1 million servings of protein to the tri-state area most affected by Hurricane Sandy.

Seven trucks, each carrying more than 40,000 pounds of protein, will head to seven food banks located in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. The donation is mostly made of ready-to-eat protectin, such as hot dogs and lunchmeats.

Feeding America, a network for 200 food banks and food-rescue organizations, will distribute the food to food banks in the storm-affected area with the highest need.

“Smithfield, in partnership with the UFCW, originally kicked off the Feeding the Hungry initiative in New York City in 2009 with a donation of seven truckloads of protein, and we are returning to the region during this time of great need with seven more,” Dennis Pittman, Director of Corporate Communications and Public Affairs for Smithfield, said in a statement.
