Small Business Saturday: another day to shop
- November 25, 2011
First there was Black Friday, then Cyber Monday. Now small businesses are urging consumers to support local retailers on Small Business Saturday, the Saturday after Thanksgiving.
In its second annual year, Small Business Saturday was an initiative founded by American Express.
Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell has officially designated Nov. 26 as Small Business Saturday and Virginia. He has been issuing public service announcements encouraging shoppers to support local shops and stores.
“Please use this opportunity on Nov. 26 to support our local retailers and help create Virginia jobs,” McDonnell says.
Many Virginia communities are advertising local deals on Facebook accounts, other forms of social media and their websites. The National Federation of Independent Business is including a list of small retailers offering discounts that day at http://www.nfib.com/smallbusinesssaturday
