Skanska USA has been awarded a $33 million contract from James Madison University in Harrisonburg to renovate and expand Duke Hall. Originally built in 1967, the building houses the University’s School of Art and Art History programs.

The 65,000-square-foot renovation and 51,500-square-foot, three-story addition of Duke Hall will include replacement of many of the building’s main systems, installation of new elevators and modifications to the visual art studios and labs to meet updated safety codes. The additional space will house studios and classroom space for academic programs.
Once renovations are complete, the facility will be dedicated solely to the School of Art and Art History.

Skanska will be working in association with a local builder, Nielsen Builders Inc., which has offices in Harrisonburg and Charlottesville. The project is seeking silver certification under the LEED program (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) and is slated for completion in November 2013.
