Salamander Resort & Spa, the long-anticipated luxury resort being developed in Middleburg by BET co-founder Sheila Johnson, will open in August 2013.

Set on 340 acres, the 168-room resort is 65 percent complete.

“I am delighted to finalize this opening timeline,” Johnson said in a statement. She is CEO and founder of Salamander Hotels & Resorts, the hotel company overseeing the design, development and management of the resort. “This property has been my passion ever since I set foot on it nearly a decade ago.”

Johnson announced the schedule for the resort’s opening at a ceremony with Middleburg Mayor Betsy Allen Davis dedicating the town’s new $11 million water and wastewater treatment plants.

The resort features 12,000 square feet of conference and event facilities, including a 5,000-square-foot grand ballroom.

The facility will include a 23,000-square-foot spa and an equestrian center with a 22-stall stable and practice ring.

Resort dining will be overseen by Todd Gray, a chef nominated for the James Beard Award.

Rates during peak season at the resort will range from $425 to $575 per night for a 540-square-foot guest room, depending on views and features such as working fireplaces. Suite pricing ranges from $775 to $3,500 per night.

Johnson founded Salamander Hotels & Resorts in 2005. Prem Devadas is the company’s president.

Johnson has ownership in three professional sports teams: the NBA’s Washington Wizards, the WNBA’s Washington Mystics and the NHL’s Washington Capitals.
