Samsung, Google lead mobile phone market

Samsung remains the dominant handset manufacturer while Google Android continues to increase its share of the smartphone market, according to a new survey of the mobile phone industry by Reston-based comScore Inc.

MobiLens, a ComScore service, surveyed 30,000 mobile phone subscribers during the three months ending in January 2012.

The survey found that 234 million Americans over the age of 13 use mobile devices. The number of smartphone users passed the 100 million mark in January, up 13 percent since the previous survey in October

Samsung continues to lead the smartphone segment with 25.4 percent of mobile subscribers in January, virtually unchanged from October. Trailing Samsung are: LG, 19.7 percent; Motorola, 13.2 percent; Apple, 12.8 percent and RIM, 6.6 percent. Apple was the only manufacturer to show an increase, up 2 percentage points since October.

Google, meanwhile, continues to pull away from competitors as the top smartphone platform. It had 48.6 percent of smartphone subscribers in January, up 2.3 percentage points from October. Apple followed with 29.5 percent, up 1.4 percentage points.

Trailing them were RIM, 15.2 percent; Microsoft, 4.4 percent; and Symbian, 1.5 percent; all of which lost market share during the three-month period.
