Sabra to expand in Chesterfield

Sabra Dipping Co. plans to expand its hummus manufacturing facility in Chesterfield County and open a 20,000-square-foot research and development facility on the site.

The $28 million investment is expected to create 90 jobs over the next few years. There are currently 430 people employed at the Chesterfield location.

Sabra will begin the expansion immediately, which will increase its manufacturing capacity by 50 percent. The investment will add two lines, a packaging automation system and water waste systems.

The company’s Center of Excellence research and development facility will establish best practices in culinary, food science, production, engineering, packaging, supply chain and product delivery, as well as agricultural studies with local universities of chickpeas, fruits and vegetables.

“The Sabra Center of Excellence will be home to experts in areas of food technology, agriculture, nutrition, manufacturing and distribution and is the next important step in the outstanding growth of our company,” Ronen Zohar, CEO of Sabra, said in a statement.  “The fact that we are building it in Virginia is a testament to our belief in the people, the community and the resources available here.  This research and development center will push the envelope and enable us continue to expand and define the possibilities in the dips and spreads category in terms of innovation, taste, health and beyond.”
