Potomac Hospital in Woodbridge said today that it has signed a letter of intent to merge with Norfolk-based Sentara Healthcare.

Potomac Hospital’s board considered 29 potential merger partners before settling on Sentara. “These past few years have been a period in which many hospitals, including Potomac, have experienced economic difficulties,” William M. Moss, the president and CEO of Potomac Hospital, said in a statement. “This new partnership will safeguard our ability to deliver valuable health-care services to the Prince William [County] community.”

As part of the merger agreement, Sentara will set up a community health foundation to address unmet health-care needs among Prince William residents. Sentara also pledged to invest in Potomac Hospital’s infrastructure to help it meet growing demands for health care.
