Port traffic up 5.6 percent in November

Container traffic at the Port of Virginia increased 5.6 percent in November.
The Port of Virginia handled 163,210 TEUs, or 20-foot equivalent units, in November, compared to 154,577 TEUs in November 2009. TEUs are 20-foot equivalent units. Most containers equal two TEUs.
Year-to-date traffic is up 10 percent. For the first 11 months of the year, the Port of Virginia handled 1.76 million TEUs, compared with 1.6 million TEUs during the first 11 months of 2009.
The port also increased its handling of breakbulk cargo by 13.8 percent. The port handled 14,393 tons of breakbulk cargo in November, compared with 12,646 in the same month last year.
