Planning district commissions: a good source for information

Virginia’s planning district commissions were created to facilitate regional cooperation among local governments to address regional problems and issues. The commissions’ primary purpose is to help local governments with grant applications, program implementations, land-use planning, mapping and regional transportation plans.

But they are also huge data sources — which can be useful for businesses in the region. Each planning district is the Affiliate State Data Center for the region. Each serves as the regional contact for the Commonwealth Intergovernmental Review Process, providing data for many state agencies and commissions.

The commissions are made up of elected officials and citizens appointed by member local governments. Commission offices are located generally in the central location by the commission charter. See the chart below for your district’s office location.
