Orbital Sciences dedicates mission operations center
- November 16, 2010
Dulles-based Orbital Sciences Corp. has dedicated a new facility that will serve as a mission control center for the company’s cargo logistics missions to the International Space Station.
David W. Thompson, Orbital’s chairman and CEO, says the company is less than a year away from its first scheduled launch to the space station.
Orbital’s Dulles campus includes three other control centers that support other satellite and launch vehicle missions.
Under NASA’s Commercial Orbital Transportation Services program, Orbital is developing a spacecraft, launch vehicle and ground infrastructure to deliver cargo and supplies to the space station.
Orbital was awarded a $1.9 billion contract in late 2008 to carry out eight cargo logistics missions to the space station from 2011 to 2015.
