ODU forms partnership with CIVIC Leadership Institute

Old Dominion University has formed a partnership with a Hampton Roads civic group that will result in a college-level leadership program.
As part of the arrangement, ODU will offer the 160-year-old CIVIC Leadership Institute programmatic support and office space in the university’s Innovation Research Park.
The CIVIC Leadership Institute is a regional leadership development program that creates a network of people willing to work to improve life in Hampton Roads. Each year, CIVIC recruits a class of about 40 people who meet over nine months to learn more about issues facing the region.
““Community engagement is one of the key initiatives in Old Dominion’s strategic plan,” John Broderick, the university’s president, said in a statement. “Partnering with an organization with the stature and strength of CIVIC opens new opportunities for the university to accomplish that goal.”
One of aims of the partnership is the creation of a college-level leadership program, which will involve all colleges and universities in the region.
“Graduates of local universities or young professionals who grew up here often leave because they don’t believe career opportunities exist,” Cathy Lewis, CIVIC’s executive director, said in a statement.“ The program we envision will link the best and brightest graduates with local leaders who can help young people identify and explore possibilities to succeed in Hampton Roads.”
