ODEC power plant application accepted
- October 7, 2009
The Dendron Town Council accepted an application for a zoning permit Tuesday night to build what would be become the largest coal-fired plant in Virginia, according to The Virginian-Pilot.
The Old Dominion Electric Cooperative’s (ODEC) zoning permit now goes to the Surry Planning Commission for review, although the final decision will remain with the town council.
ODEC has proposed building a 1,600-megawatt coal-fueled plant on 1,400 acres in the center of Dendron. ODEC wants to start construction in 2012 and complete the plant by 2016.
Some citizens in the town of 300 are concerned about harmful emissions from the plant.
