Northrop Grumman has eliminated 380 salaried jobs at its Newport News shipbuilding facility.
“This is a necessary step to improve efficiency across the organization,” Matt Mulherin, vice president and general manager of Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding in Newport News, said in a statement.
The layoffs was caused in part by reaching milestones on existing contracts, including the near completion of the aircraft carrier Gerald R. Ford’s design.
It was the first reduction of jobs in Newport News by the company in more than a decade. Of the 380 affected employees, more than 100 were identified as having prior trade experience and were offered hourly positions, such as welders and electricians.
