Norfolk Southern releases sustainability report

Norfolk Southern Corp. released its third annual sustainability report as it attempts to cut emissions 10 percent from 2009 levels.
The report describes the railway’s efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and track its economic, environmental and social initiatives.
Blair Wimbush, vice president of real estate and corporate sustainability officer for Norfolk Southern, says the company will focus on four priorities in 2011 to reduce its environmental impact, including:
- reducing emissions 10 percent from 2009 levels by 2014
- improving energy efficiency in company-owned facilities
- encouraging employee recycling and other programs
- continuing to engage communities to improve conservation, volunteerism and civic leadership
