Norfolk plant to shutter, eliminating 570 jobs

A contact lenses manufacturing plant in Norfolk will close, eliminating 570 jobs, according to The Virginian-Pilot.

CooperVision Inc. said it has more manufacturing capacity than it needs and will move production to plants in Puerto Rico and England.

Employees will provided with severance, and the plant will close in phases . It will shut down completely by December 2010.

About 505 of the plant’s workers are permanent, and 65 are seasonal.
