Navy recommends carrier move to Florida
- January 15, 2009
The Navy officially recommended Wednesday that an aircraft carrier be moved from Norfolk Naval Station to Mayport Naval Station in Florida. Virginia’s congressional delegation believes the move could cost the state up to 11,000 jobs.
The debate now goes to Congress. The Navy argues that docking the Navy’s entire fleet of carriers is risky.
Gov. Timothy M. Kaine and the state’s congressional leaders say the worries are unfounded and that a move would be fiscally unsound. Preparing Mayport to house a carrier would cost up to $1 billion. (The Virginian-Pilot)
