Media General restructures following newspaper sale

Richmond-based Media General is restructuring in keeping with its new primary focus as a television broadcaster.
The company recently sold 63 publications to a subsidiary of Omaha, Neb.-based Berkshire Hathaway Inc. for $142 million. The sale included the Richmond Times-Dispatch and seven other daily newspaper.
After the deal, the company owns 18 network-affiliated television stations in 11 states.
The company will replace its five market regions with two geographic regions headed by corporate vice presidents James R. Conschafter and John R. Cottingham.
In addition, John A. Schauss, vice president-market operations, is retiring and the company will not fill his position.
“Media General said that the company’s other two current market leaders, Marilyn Hammond, president and market leader-North Carolina, and Dan Bradley, president and market leader-Ohio/Rhode Island, will remain with Media General in key roles that will be announced at a later date.
Conschafter will oversee:
North Carolina: Greenville, WNCT-TV; Raleigh, WNCN-TV,
Ohio: Columbus, WCMH-TV
Rhode Island: Providence, WJAR-TV
South Carolina: Spartanburg/Greenville, WSPA-TV and Asheville, NC, WYCW; Florence/Myrtle Beach, WBTW
Virginia: Roanoke, WSLS-TV
Tennessee: Johnson City, WJHL-TV
Cottingham is responsible for:
Alabama: Birmingham, WVTM-TV; Mobile, AL/Pensacola, FL, WKRG-TV;
Florida: Tampa, WFLA-TV
Georgia: Augusta, WJBF-TV; Columbus, WRBL-TV; Savannah, WSAV-TV
Mississippi: Jackson, WJTV-TV and Hattiesburg, WHLT-TV
South Carolina: Charleston, WCBD-TV
Conschafter has been president and market leader for the Virginia-Tennessee region since 2010. Before that, he had served in that role for the company’s North Carolina market since July 2009.
Cottingham has been president and market leader for the Mid-South region since July 2009. Earlier this year, he assumed additional responsibility for the company’s Florida market.
