McDonnell restoring mine safety funding
- April 13, 2010
Gov. Bob McDonnell is proposing an amendment to the biennial budget to boost mine safety in Virginia.
The move comes after 29 West Virginia miners died last week in the deadliest mining accident in 40 years.
McDonnell said he would propose an additional $750,000 for the Virginia Department of Mines, Minerals and Energy, to be used for equipment used in safety mine inspections and to fill mine safety inspector and specialist positions.
The General Assembly’s budget had cut the department’s budget by 15 percent in a dismal budget session.
