Major Virginia stocks soar with Dow

The Dow Jones Industrial Average soared a record 936 points Monday and most major Virginia stocks followed suit.
The Dow’s record climb came after global banks announced efforts to back banks and unfreeze credit markets. Standard & Poor’s 500 Index grew 11.7 percent and the Nasdaq Composite was up 11.8 percent.
Almost all of Virginia largest stocks saw gains Monday, but many of Virginia’s hardest hit stocks in the past few weeks saw the biggest gains.
Richmond insurer Genworth Financial soared 80.6 percent on Monday to close at $6.32. Virginia coal companies also saw big gains after several weeks of losses. Richmond-based James River Coal Co.’s stock price jumped 30.1 percent to close at $21.25, Richmond-based Massey Energy Co. grew 27.7 percent to close at $26.47, and Abingdon-based Alpha Natural Resources grew 35 percent to close at $42.79.
