The Lynchburg-based Edison2 team has received a $5 million award for creating a consumer-friendly car that can get at least 100 miles per gallon.

Edison2’s Very Light Car No. 98 was named the Automotive X Prize winner in its category in a ceremony today in Washington, D.C. The competition was sponsored by Progressive Insurance.

Two other teams each won a $2.5 million award in the competition’s alternative car classes.
